“Don’t mix business with family?!"

People love to say “don’t mix business with family,” but what if family is the business?

I know some people who say, “I need my own money in case things go left.”
I get the fear behind that… especially as a woman. But for me, it felt backwards to prepare for separation in a space meant for unity.

We decided early on in our marriage:

  • We will build this as one house.

  • We will have hard conversations about spending, saving, and investing.

  • And we’d both have ownership even when our roles looked different.

Yes, we check in about purchases. Yes, we plan budgets together. No, I don’t need a secret fund because I trust the structure we’ve built and the person I married.

Being married to an entrepreneur isn’t always calm! Ideas change, income fluctuates, and risk is part of the game.
But I’d rather be in it with him than watching from the sidelines.

This isn’t his business or my business. It’s our life, and we lead it together.

Look… I know this might sound wild to some folks.

Truth is, I’ve seen too many relationships fall apart not because of cheating, but because of hidden decisions.

Having a shared account is only a piece of the puzzle. Having a shared vision is where I saw the difference in our progress.

If I win, she wins. If I take a loss, she knows about it the same day.
We do check-ins. We ask hard questions. We adjust the plan when it’s not working. Sometimes I still catch myself thinking I can handle it all and give her the summary later, but that’s not leadership, that’s pride.

We said yes to oneness when we said yes to each other. We’re not perfect with this, but we’re committed to making decisions like one unit, even when we disagree.
